Pat Cummins celebrates dismissing Hashim Amla to claim his first Test wicket
A South Africa batting collapse put Australia in charge of the second Test on day one in Johannesburg.

Half-centuries from AB de Villiers, Ashwell Prince and Jacques Kallis, who became only the fourth man to pass 12,000 Test runs, looked to have the home side well placed.

But with Australian seamer Peter Siddle taking 3-69, the hosts lost six wickets for 25 runs to slip to 266 all out.

Bad light forced the close before Australia could begin their reply.

South Africa, leading the two-match series 1-0 after an eight wicket win in the first test lost openers Graeme Smith and Jacques Rudolph before Kallis (54) combined with Hashim Amla to add 80 for the third wicket.

LEADING TEST RUN-SCORERS

  • Sachin Tendulkar 15,086
  • Rahul Dravid 12,979
  • Ricky Ponting 12,495
  • Jacques Kallis 12,003
  • Brian Lara 11,953

Cape town born kallis, 36, began the day needing 51 runs to join Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Ricky Ponting in reaching 12,000 runs.

In the same Siddle over the all-rounder, who also has 270 Test wickets, flicked a six over long leg to reach his half-century, struck a boundary to go past 12,000 runs and was then caught at mid-wicket by Usman Khawaja.

Soon after, Amla was caught at second slip by Ponting to give 18-year-old seamer Pat Cummins, the second youngest Australian debutant, a first Test wicket.

It was left to De Villiers (64) and Prince (50) to rebuild with a fifth-wicket stand of 112, but when they both fell playing poor shots to Siddle and off-spinner Nathan Lyon respectively, South Africa subsided.

Vernon Philander was trapped lbw by Lyon, Mark Boucher was caught attempting to hook Siddle and, with the light fading, the left-arm spin of Australia captain Michael Clarke accounted for Morne Morkel and Imran Tahir.
